MEXT Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships 2026 Fully Funded in Japan

The scholarship is presented by MEXT for Under & Postgraduate students from worldwide in Japan. This scholarship covers all living expenses & provides up to 114,000 to 145,000 JPY/month. The last date to apply for this scholarship is 31 May 2025.

Benefits

  1. Full tuition fee waiver
  2. Monthly stipend:
    1. Undergraduate: Approx. 117,000 JPY
    1. Master’s: Approx. 144,000 JPY
    1. PhD: Approx. 145,000 JPY
  3. Round-trip airfare to/from Japan
  4. Free Japanese language training (if required)
  5. Accommodation support through university dormitories or subsidies

Eligibility Requirements

For Undergraduate Applicants:

  1. Must have completed 12 years of formal education or equivalent by March 2026.
  2. Age: Must be above 20.
  3. Good academic record and physical/mental health.

For Postgraduate (Research, Master’s, or PhD) Applicants:

  1. Bachelor’s degree (for Master’s) or Master’s degree (for PhD) completed or to be completed before departure.
  2. Age usually under 35 years.
  3. Research proposal required for postgraduate applicants.
  4. English or Japanese language proficiency (no strict IELTS requirement but language ability is assessed).

How to Apply?

  1. Contact the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your country for detailed application policies and deadlines.
  2. Fill out the required application form.
  3. Submit academic documents, research proposals (for postgraduate), recommendation letters, and health certificates.
  4. Appear for a written test and interview executed by the provincial Japanese task.
  5. Final selection is done by MEXT in Japan.
