How to get a Recommendation / Reference Letter for international scholarships? (Free template!)

Most of the international universities demand a recommendation letter before admitting a student on scholarship.

but what is a recommendation letter?

A letter of recommendation is a letter written by someone who can recommend an individual’s work or academic performance. It’s typically sent to a hiring manager or admissions officer who is deciding whether to employ or admit a candidate.

Recommendation and reference letter can be used alternatively.

When should you get it?

A student is required to present/send it at the time of admission. Many universities will demand two or more letters. Please try to make more from different faculty members to be sure. Store your letters with you and send them with all your admission applications.

Who should you get it from?

Choosing the best people to write your letter of recommendation can be tricky. The letter writer should be someone who can speak directly to the quality of your academic performance.

The ideal recommendation would come from someone who:

  • Is familiar with your work and feels positive about it
  • Has the time to write a letter that will truly impress a hiring manager
  • Is in a position of authority or otherwise has a reputation that will mean something to the employer or admissions officer.
  • The best fit for students is their Head of department or a (assistant, associate or full) professor at the department that you are studying in.
